Copyright free gives you restricted options and it may be hard to find. Consider copyrighted music with filmmaker-friendly licensing. incompetech.com is Kevin MacLeod's library with Creative Commons Attribution. Use his music for free on condition of giving the appropriate credit which would work for a short film. For some of my indie projects I pay Kevin USD 30 per song for an even more flexible license.
